Barrel Plating

Barrel Plating is the method of electroplating high volumes of small to medium sized parts using a continuously revolving barrel. By plating high quantities in one barrel, barrel plating is commonly accepted as the most cost effective approach to electroplating.

Although barrel plating has existed since the 1800s, it was not widely used until the mid 1900s when inefficient wooden barrels were replaced by chemically resistant plastics. It was then that barrel plating became a viable alternative to rack plating and wire rack plating.

Spectrum Metal Finishing offers barrel plating as a plating process for gold plating, silver plating, nickel plating, black nickel plating, brass plating, copper plating, electroless nickel plating, and our environmentally friendly chrome alternative. While barrel plating is not traditionally thought of as a viable option for premium quality plating, Spectrum has developed proprietary pre-plate polishing and burnishing systems which clean, grind and polish pieces to create the ideal surface for electroplating which, when combined with our barrel plating process, offer a premium plating finish at a competitive price.
